Zone Delays

Delayed entry is an optional feature on most alarm panels.  In most programmable panels it is setup on a zone by zone basis as is the amount, or time, of delay.  This feature is used on primary entrances to allow you to arm and disarm the system from inside the protected facility.  On some panels certain zones are designated as "delay" zones or "entry/exit" zones.  Those specific zones must be used if delayed arm/disarm is desired.  A typical example would be to setup the front door zone as a delay zone.  YOu can then program or manually set the time delay (usually in seconds) for entry and exit.  On more advanced panels the entry ad exit times are individually configurable which can be very useful.  Another example is to use an advanced panel to setup separate delays for zones that cover the front door and a garage door.  While you may setup a 30 sec. delay on the front door, you may considerably more time on a garage door to allow for the extra time it takes to get in and out of the garage with a vehicle.  All other zones are considered "instant" zones which means that they are active as soon as you arm the system.    Another use for delayed zones would be for any motion detectors that are in the path of you entry/exit.

Some panels allow you to setup special zones that do not become active until they "go normal".  I typically use these for garage doors to allow the homeowner to take as much time as necessary to get out of the garage.  It also allows them to leave the door partially open for pets or ventilation.  In that case this special zone never actually "goes active".

Zone Bypass

Zone bypass is another feature built into most systems that allows you to activate (arm) the alarm even though one or more zones are not in their normal state.  This can be useful if you wish to arm the system while leaving a window partially open.  Bypassing may require and manual keypad sequence or may be automatic.  By default, most panels will not arm unless all zones are in their normal states.  This helps you to be sure that you premises are secured.
